kindadifficult asked: Hello! I'm doing a project-type-thing on the indefinite pronoun "they". I've already written about how it's accepted because of the various genders outside of male and female, but I was wondering if there were any other reasons? I know that it's been accepted since the 15th century but I need to know why. My English teacher will want more evidence than what I have. :/
It’s good as a nonbinary pronoun, yes, but it’s also good if a person’s gender is unknown. (This person lost their dog.) It’s also good if the gender doesn’t matter. In these cases, it’s more inclusive and less clunky than “he/she”. (A parent should spend time with their child.)
Personally, I really hope that singular they becomes more accepted in an academic setting. :/
