Dear Cissexism,

You are terrible and you make the world more terrible.

A personal rant:

I don’t usually make personal posts on here, but I think this one is appropriate.

I have a lovely child who will be two in January. They were assigned male at birth. They have a male name. (Primarily because I like the people I named them after.)

I hate the holidays, because everything is so fucking gendered. All my child’s presents were “boy toys”, and I was worried that my mother would have a fit when my grandmother got them a pink ladybug.

The clothing I received was just as bad. I start an internship in the spring, and I’m expected to present as a woman. So all the clothing I received was, while cute, undeniably “female”. Box after box contained sweaters and shirts and jewelry that screamed “THE PERSON WHO WEARS THIS IS A WOMAN.”

I wanted to get my child a plastic car—a cozy coupe, I think it’s called. They’re traditionally made of sturdy red-and-yellow plastic. Nice and gender-neutral. WHY is there one “for girls”? (It’s pink and purple. My child is colorblind—what the hell do they care what color it is?)

I see so many cute things I want to buy my child—hairbows, owl jammies, little onesies with goldfish on them—and I can’t, because society says that my baby is a boy, and we’d be mocked or harshly criticized for it. MY CHILD IS TWO. STOP. GENDERING. THEM.

Notes:

  • I’d like to buy cute “girly” things for my child, and I would, but I live with my parents and rely on them for so much. I can’t afford to rock the boat.
  • I continue buying my child “boy toys”—they just look so much more FUN. And I cannot stand the color pink. ^^;;
  • Do any other trans*/genderqueer/nonbinary people have these problems at the holidays? Or cis-parents who are aware of Gendery Things?
